The Shedd aquarium was the gift of retail leader John G Shedd to the city of Chicago. Although Shedd only lived long enough to se the architect's first drawings for the aquarium, his widow, Mary R Shedd, cut the ribbon at the official opening ceremony. As one of the first inland aquariums in the world, Shedd had to rely on a costume-made railroad car, the Nautilus, fore the transport of fish and seawater. The Nautilus lasted until 1959. In 1930, 20 railroad tank cars made eight rund trips between Key West and Chicago to transport 3800000 liter of seawater fore the seawatertanks. In 1933 it was part of the world's fair. In 1971, the aquarium added one of its most popular exhibits reproducing a Caribbean coral reef. In 1991, the aquarium opend its oceanarium, a large addition to the aquarium that features marine mammals, including pacific white-sided dolphins and beluga whales. The main 11000000 liter tank made it the largest indoor marine mammal facility in the world. The Shedd's newest permanent exhibit, Wild Reef, opend in 2003. Located two levels below the main building, the 2800000 liter wild reef recreates a phillippine coral reef and is based on the Apo Island Marine reserve, complete with living corals, multiple species of fish and rays, and a collection of sharks. The main draw of this attraction is a 1500000 litter shark exhibit with 3,7 meter high curved windows, allowing visitors a diver's-eye view.
After having enterd the aquarium and taken your picture you'll finde your self in the middle the carribean reef, a grand rotunda aquarium with a green sea turtle, moray eels, regal rays, parrotfish , sharks and duzen of other fishs. Going left we meet Amazon rising, where you meet the rainforest of South America with the world biggest river the Amazon and it inhabitans, like caimans and scaring piranhas. Here you also finde the elevator down to the wild reef. Wich has a large tank with sharks, but also the fragile ecosytems of the mangrove forest can be studdyed here. Going up again we dive down in the worlds oceans with its spectacular creatures like the seadragons and the octopus. Next we look at Lake Michigan, with its interesting fish, but there also are alligator turtels and the lively North American otters. Then its time fore the world of the islands, with its endemic animals, like the rhinoceros iguana. The last series of aquariums shows us the life in rivers, both those in the U.S. and those abroad, where we find creatures like cichlides. Ging a bit back and down we enter the Oceanarium, here you can eat a bite, look at the interesting Fantasea show, ore just enjoy the the facinating life of seaotters, sealions, penguins and whales.
